A custom hair prosthesis, explained simply

Whether you call it a medical wig, a wig for chemo, or a cranial prosthesis, the goal is the same: hair that looks like you, feels comfortable and fits your life.

What is a cranial prosthesis?

A cranial prosthesis is a hair prosthesis made for someone with medical hair loss. The term is used by many insurance plans and on prescriptions; in everyday life most people say medical wig. A custom piece is selected and fitted around your head shape, hair goals and comfort, rather than bought off the shelf.

It's non-surgical: nothing is implanted, and you can remove it.

Hair types

Human hair looks and moves most like your own hair and can usually be styled with heat. It needs more care and can react to humidity.

Synthetic hair holds its style through washing and needs less daily care. Most synthetic fibers can't take high heat.

Blends combine the two to balance natural movement with easier care.

Base types

The base (or cap) is the part that sits against your scalp. It shapes comfort, breathability and how natural the hairline and part look.

  • Lace bases are light and breathable, with a soft, natural-looking hairline.
  • Monofilament areas give the look of hair growing from the scalp and let you part hair in different directions.
  • Silicone or polyurethane areas can help a piece grip securely, which some people find helpful with complete hair loss.
  • Custom-molded bases are shaped to your head for a close, secure fit.

Attachment

Pieces can stay in place with adjustable straps, clips, silicone grip panels, medical-grade tapes or adhesives, or a close custom fit. The right choice depends on how much hair you have, your skin, your activities and how often you want to take the piece off. We'll talk through what feels comfortable and secure for you.

Care

Gentle washing with products made for wigs or hair pieces, careful drying, storage on a form or stand, and limited heat all help a piece last. Your consultant will explain a care routine for the specific hair and base you choose.

Lifespan

How long a piece lasts depends on the hair type, the base, how often it's worn and how it's cared for. Some people keep a second piece to rotate. We'll explain what to expect for the options you're considering.

What happens at a consultation

We'll talk about your hair goals, your daily routine and what matters most to you, whether that's a natural hairline, comfort during treatment, or something easy to look after. We'll explain hair, base and attachment options, take the measurements a custom piece needs, and give you pricing for the options you're considering. Personalized pricing provided after consultation.

Consultations can be by phone, by video, or in person where available. You're welcome to bring someone with you.

Discretion and privacy

Hair loss is personal. Your inquiry goes only to the Avelore Care team, our website doesn't use advertising trackers, and we don't ask for medical details online. Read our privacy notice.

For caregivers and family

You can start an inquiry on someone's behalf. Choose “Someone I'm helping” and we'll contact you, not them, unless you tell us otherwise. It can help to talk with the person first about whether they'd like support, and what kind of look they'd feel comfortable with.
